September 14, 2014 marks the 200th anniversary of our National Anthem.
At dawn on September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry raised a huge American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. At seeing the flag flying over the fort, everyone knew that the Americans had stood strong, and the fort had not fallen to the British. Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the song that would become the National Anthem.
